Position Summary
BÜHLMANN Diagnostics is seeking an experienced, highly credible Medical Science Liaison (MSL) to serve as a field-based scientific and clinical expert supporting the company’s diagnostic portfolio across the United States.
The primary focus of this position will be Gastroenterology, with particular emphasis on advancing clinical understanding and appropriate utilization of fecal calprotectin (fCAL) testing. The MSL will also provide scientific and medical support for BÜHLMANN’s growing portfolios in Neuroimmunology and Allergy.
The successful candidate will be an MD or equivalent physician-level medical professional capable of engaging peer-to-peer with gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, laboratory medical directors, pathologists, neurologists, allergists, academic investigators, and other healthcare leaders.
A central objective of the role will be to expand physician understanding of the clinical utility of non-invasive biomarkers-particularly fecal calprotectin-and support evidence-based diagnostic pathways that help clinicians determine which patients may require additional invasive diagnostic evaluation.
This individual will operate at the intersection of clinical medicine, laboratory diagnostics, scientific education, and market development, helping translate scientific evidence into clinical practice while maintaining the highest standards of medical and scientific integrity.
Gastroenterology – Primary Focus
- Serve as BÜHLMANN’s primary field-based medical expert for fecal calprotectin (fCAL) and other gastroenterology biomarkers.
- Conduct peer-to-peer scientific discussions with gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, advanced practice providers, laboratory directors, pathologists, and other healthcare professionals regarding the appropriate clinical utilization of fecal calprotectin.
- Educate clinicians on the evidence supporting fecal calprotectin as a non-invasive marker of intestinal inflammation and its role as an aid in differentiating inflammatory bowel disease from functional gastrointestinal disorders.
- Advance awareness of evidence-based diagnostic pathways incorporating fecal calprotectin before referral for or progression to invasive diagnostic procedures when clinically appropriate.
- Work with GI practices, health systems, IDNs, academic institutions, and laboratories to identify barriers preventing appropriate utilization of fecal calprotectin testing.
- Support development of clinical algorithms and diagnostic pathways that incorporate fecal calprotectin into the evaluation of patients presenting with gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Educate PCPs and other referring clinicians on when fecal calprotectin testing may provide useful clinical information before GI referral.
- Partner with gastroenterology leaders to evaluate opportunities to improve patient triage, referral patterns, GI capacity utilization, and appropriate selection of patients for further diagnostic evaluation.
- Develop relationships with national and regional Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) in gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease.
- Identify and support physician champions who can advance evidence-based utilization of fecal calprotectin within their institutions and professional networks.
- Support scientific programs, advisory boards, investigator-initiated research, publications, congress activities, and continuing medical education initiatives where appropriate.
Neuroimmunology & Allergy
- Engage neurologists, neuroimmunologists, allergists, immunologists, laboratory medical directors, and other relevant specialists regarding BÜHLMANN diagnostic solutions.
- Provide scientific education regarding disease biology, biomarkers, testing methodologies, clinical evidence, and appropriate diagnostic utilization.
- Develop relationships with KOLs and academic centers in neuroimmunology and allergy.
- Support scientific discussions surrounding new product introductions, clinical studies, and emerging diagnostic applications.
- Collaborate with internal product, regulatory, commercial, and scientific teams to identify unmet clinical needs and emerging opportunities.
Key Opinion Leader Development
- Identify and develop relationships with national, regional, and emerging KOLs.
- Conduct high-quality peer-to-peer scientific exchanges with physicians and researchers.
- Capture and communicate actionable insights regarding clinical practice, diagnostic pathways, unmet needs, competitive technologies, and emerging scientific trends.
- Identify opportunities for clinical research, publications, presentations, advisory boards, and scientific collaborations.
- Develop physician advocates capable of educating broader clinical audiences on evidence-based diagnostic strategies.
Medical Education & Demand Development
Activities may include:
- Physician-to-physician educational meetings.

- Laboratory/clinician joint educational programs.

The MSL will work closely with Commercial and Marketing leadership to identify markets where scientific education can address clinical adoption barriers, while maintaining appropriate separation between scientific exchange and promotional activities.

The MSL will provide the organization with field-derived medical insights that inform clinical strategy, product development, evidence-generation priorities, physician education, and market-development initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree required.
- Strong clinical and scientific credibility with the ability to conduct physician-to-physician scientific discussions.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate clinical literature, diagnostic performance data, clinical guidelines, and complex scientific concepts.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with physicians ranging from community-based practitioners to internationally recognized academic KOLs.
- Understanding of clinical decision-making and diagnostic pathways.
- Ability to operate independently in a national field-based position.
- Willingness to travel approximately 50-70%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Clinical training or professional experience in Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, Immunology, or a related specialty.
- Previous Medical Science Liaison, Medical Affairs, diagnostics, pharmaceutical, or medical device experience.
- Experience in inflammatory bowel disease or gastrointestinal diagnostics strongly preferred.
- Experience with laboratory medicine, biomarkers, immunoassays, or in vitro diagnostics.
- Existing relationships with gastroenterology KOLs, academic medical centers, IDNs, or major healthcare systems.
- Experience developing clinical pathways or diagnostic algorithms.
- Familiarity with Neuroimmunology and/or Allergy diagnostics is beneficial but not required.
Travel
Ability to travel approximately 50-70%, including customer visits, industry conferences, sales meetings, training events, and global meetings as required.
